29. September 2016 Interactively Presented Knowledge on Ocean Observation

MUTHESIUS STUDENTS AWARDED FOR DIGITAL EXHIBITS ON THE TOPIC OF “OCEAN OBSERVATION”

At this year's university competition, which adopted the topic of the Year of Science 2016*17, two innovative communication concepts from master students of the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design were successful: Tanja Lücker was awarded for her exhibit "ENSO" and the team Jana Nikoleit, Franziska Rast, Stefan Schakulat and Mathias Foot for their concept of "30°".

As part of an art project of the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" , the students had three months to develop an innovative communication design for the transfer of knowledge on the topic "ocean observation". In the end, several concepts were sent to the university competition which invites students, postdocs and young scientists to develop projects under the slogan of "show your research" on the topic of the current Year of Science. The aim is to enable citizens to experience the relevance of research for society in an interactive manner and to communicate relevant research results. Both "ENSO" und "30°" are now in the selection of the 15 best projects.

With ENSO, Lücker developed a masters project in the area of interactive information design from Prof. Tom Duscher. "ENSO" (El Nino Southern Oscillation) describes a complex circulation system of the earth's atmosphere and sea currents in the Pacific in the marine sciences. The cause-effect-interaction of the phenomenon is projected in a slightly oval room with curved walls, additionally visitors can navigate the presentation through a selection of countries. Lücker combines informative with emotional components and enables the visitors to experience the ENSO phenomenon with all their senses.

Nikoleit und her team conceptualized an interactive real room in which comprehensive ocean measurement data since the middle of the 19th century is visualized and their significance for science and the society is shown. In an aesthetically pleasing manner, the visitors are guided by interactive elements and experience complex science in an abstract way. The works will be implemented with the support of the 10 000 Euro prize money per project in the upcoming months. Among the selected projects, the jury will award the best three. The students will report on the development and implementation of their concepts on their blogs from October 2016 until the three best projects have been awarded by the jury in September 2017 under

Marine research is the topic of the Year of Science 2016*17. Seas and oceans cover 71 percent of our planet. They are the climate machine, a source of nutrition, an economic space and living space. The Years of Science are a joint initiative of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and Wissenschaft im Dialog (Science in Dialogue, WID).
