Career Day at Kiel University

Academic career paths in Germany and the legal framework

Academic career paths in Germany are mostly characterized by temporary employment often for many years. Information about legal regulations and opportunities are therefore important prerequisites for personal career planning.

On March 1st, young scientists can inform themselves about the possibilities and the legal framework for a scientific career at the Career Day at Kiel University (CAU). Invited are specialist lawyers from the German Association of University Professors and Lecturers (DHV) as well as experts from the Human Resources department of CAU and GEOMAR.

The event "Academic Career Paths in Germany and the Legal Framework" is aimed at young scientists of all disciplines, who are close to finishing their doctorate or have already completed their doctoral studies and seek further information to plan their careers. "The scientists concerned are often insecure about which legal framework applies to them," says the co-organizer of the workshop Dr. Gesche Braker, who coordinates the postdoctoral network IMAP in the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean". "For this reason, the Career Day will cover as many topics as possible and show opportunities for development for those interested from all disciplines and provide information on the pitfalls of fixed-term contracts." Good decisions on personal careers can be made only with in-depth knowledge of academic career paths and the relevant legal framework.

After the presentations of the specialist lawyers Dr. Ulrike Preißler and Dr. Sven Hendricks from the German Association of University Professors and Lecturers, there will be an opportunity for individual counseling by experts from the Human Resources departments of Kiel University and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.

The information event is organized by the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean", the SFB 754 "Climate – Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean", the Transatlantic Research School "Helmholtz Research School for Ocean System Science and Technology (HOSST)", Kiel University and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.
