Overview
In the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean", in the summer semester 2018, the focus is on the topic of "sustainable aquaculture". Researchers from biology, agricultural sciences, philosophy and social sciences have teamed up with experts and operators from politics, industry and associations with the goal of providing a wide audience from the public, industry and politics with an understanding of the potential and the challenges of sustainable aquaculture.
Different events, such as a public lecture series, will highlight the topic from different angles. Furthermore, the expert knowledge of actors from Kiel will be presented at international symposia. For the school programs in the ocean:lab of the 'Kiel Forschungswerkstatt' of the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean", a new course unit is being developed. In order to integrate the topic "sustainable aquaculture" into the training of fish farmers in the long-term excursions and lecture events with a practical orientation will be offered; a collaboration with the Rendsburg fisheries school will be initiated with a first excursion of the fisheries students to aquaculture companies and institutes on the East and West Coast. Moreover, the dialogue with policy makers on the topic "sustainable aquaculture" will be promoted through a parliamentary evening. Networking between aquaculture actors from industry and science will be enhanced during a "Kiel Marketplace" and joint activities (e.g. "Day on the Quay") as well as through excursions.
Significance of aquaculture
Aquaculture has a long tradition world-wide and contributes significantly to the nutrition of the world's population. With a production of around 77 million tons per year (FAO, 2017), more than half of all fish and seafood products on our plates now come from agriculture. The increasing demand for fish and the simultaneous decrease in natural fish stocks as a result of overfishing have led to the strong growth of the aquaculture industry, which has lasted for decades.
Apart from the use of, for the most part, animal products to meet nutritional needs , the demand for micro and macro algae is also growing (annual production of about 30 million tons; FAO 2017). Algae can provide great amounts of biomass and contain substances such as fats (in particular long chain unsaturated fatty acids), proteins, minerals and vitamins, which are used both in human nutrition as well as in animal feed. A great potential is further attributed to medically active substances. The monoclonal antibodies that can be produced in micro algae cells can, for example, be used as protein-based drugs in cancer therapy or in laboratory diagnostics. There is still great demand for research in order to be able to exploit the enormous potential of algal substances.
Sustainability and Aquaculture
As is true for the entire food and biomass industry, the aquaculture industry faces the challenge of sustainable production.
Conventional aquaculture is often critically assessed because of its use of feed on the basis of wild fish, the destruction of mangrove forests or the use of antibiotics in fish farming. Similarly, the production of microalgae is considered to be not very resource-efficient.
How can the principles of sustainability be implemented in aquaculture? This question forms the basis of current aquaculture research at Kiel University. The core topic here is the development of sustainable feed, in which fish-based sources of protein and fat (fish flour and fish oil) can be replaced by alternative, mostly plant-based resources. In regard to the topic of animal health and animal welfare, the research focuses mainly on finding methods to determine the well-being of aquatic animals, which, in contrast to that of terrestrial animals, is to a great extent unknown. Improved welfare conditions also lead to disease reduction and lower medication use – a practice which has been applied, in particular, in the EU, Canada or Australia for years (FAO, OIE, WHO, 2006).
In addition to this, innovative technologies and rearing systems contribute to enforcing systems which allow for ecologically sensitive and sustainable aquaculture:
One approach is, for example, the use of polycultures, i.e. the combination of different aquaculture organisms. In aquaponics facilities fish breeding is connected with the cultivation of crops in a closed ecological cycle. The excretions of the fish serve as fertilizer for the plants. By removing the nutrients, the plants in turn clean the water of the fish. In this manner, it is possible to reduce water consumption and use the nutrients efficiently. The same principle is pursued in the open sea in so-called integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA): The breeding of fish and shrimps is combined with the cultivation of mussels and macro algae, which take in the byproducts of the fish and shrimps and thereby prevent additional nutrient input into the environment. These examples for sustainable solutions are highly promising but require intensive research. The aim is to establish ecologically sensitive aquaculture in the future.

Lecture series
Aquaculture: the Balance between Global Nutrition and Sustainability
Aquaculture is booming and is the fastest growing sector in the food industry. The global increase in the demand for fish and seafood products and the concurrent decline in wild stocks due to overfishing are the main reasons for this development. However, in recent decades the intensification of aquaculture techniques has often had a negative impact on the environment. Can aquaculture really be an answer to overfishing and food security?
Current research results and new technologies show that ecologically sensitive and sustainable aquaculture is possible. Consequences of traditional aquaculture such as pollution, adverse effects on wild populations or energy and water consumption can be minimized and animal health as well as species-appropriate husbandry conditions can be taken into account.
The public lecture series "Aquaculture: the Balance between Global Nutrition and Sustainability" informs about the development of aquaculture, solutions and current procedures for a sustainable production as well as the significance for the environment, society and economics. On seven dates, experts from science, industry and politics will take a look at current aquaculture topics from different points of view.
The lectures will take place Wednesdays from 5:00 pm until 7:00pm in the lecture hall 'Klaus-Murmann-Hörsaal', Leibnizstraße 1, at Kiel University.
The lecture is highly recommended for students who are planning on writing their thesis in the diverse field of "aquaculture" (relevant disciplines: agricultural sciences / food science, philosophy / environmental ethics, biology, etc.).
The lecture series aims to reach the interested public, students and young researchers, as well as employees of all faculties of the university.
Admission is free.

Future Ocean semester topic and KNAQ joint booth at the fair
The Semester topic "Sustainable Aquaculture" within the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" at Kiel University (CAU) will cooperate with the Competence Network Aquaculture (KNAQ) through a joint appearance at the AQUA2018 in Montpellier.
The objectives of the joint presentation of the Future Ocean Semester topic and KNAQ are:
-Communicating our definition of "sustainable aquaculture" in an international expert environment.
-Depiction of the aquaculture production site Schleswig-Holstein.
-Presentation of the host country Germany for Aquaculture Europe 2019 in Berlin.
The Future Ocean Semester topic and KNAQ will be represented at the AQUA2018 trade show at booth # 68 on the ground floor of the Le Corum Congress Center. The trade fair starts on Sunday, August 26, and ends on Tuesday, August 28.
At the center of the booth is the model of a closed-loop plant for sustainable and resource-saving fish production. Visitors of the fair will have the possibility to deal with this technology in three different formats:
A scale model of a circulation system with basins, water treatment and other peripherals were recreated by the engineers of Spranger company in a 3D printer. The model corresponds to the real construction of such a system in the smallest detail and enables the visitor to view angles and understand connections, as otherwise only known to model railway enthusiasts.
The construction plans of the model plant were created in a CAD program and used for 3D printing. Visitors will be able to experience a 360 ° camera tour with the help of the Virtual Reality (VR) technology by the company Oculus. With the help of VR glasses, they will also be able to experience a camera tour through the real-life circulation system in full operation. It is the tilapia (cichlid) aquaponic system of the company ECF Farmsystems in Berlin.
