Mentoring

via:mento_ocean – Mentoring for female postdocs

For many female scientists, the question of a future career is raised again after they have received a doctorate. Many female postdocs still decide against a long-term scientific career. Apart from structural barriers, there is often a lack of positive role models, who can raise interest for a career as a professor. This is where the mentoring program via:mento_ocean comes in.

With via:mento_ocean, the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" supports female postdocs from the marine sciences in Kiel with the planning and development of their scientific careers after they have finished their doctorate. The focus of this program lies on personal feedback as well as support through a mentor. Mentors in via:mento_ocean are experienced professors from German and international universities and research institutes. In addition, via:mento_ocean provides the possibility for participants to expand their networks in Kiel. Workshops on various key skills of a successful scientific career are also offered – for example, workshops on career planning or application trainings for professorship positions.

The mentoring program for the Cluster of Excellence is integrated into the university-wide mentoring program via:mento. The third cycle of via:mento_ocean is running from September 2017 until December 2018.

The high quality of via:mento_ocean has also been recognized by the DFG, which lists the program as a best-practice measure for supporting female scientists in their online toolbox of gender equality measures in science.
