Capacity Building

The objectives of capacity building in the Cluster reflect the goals of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the UNESCO, leaders in developing an understanding of capacity building: long term continual development using a country's own human, scientific, technological, organizational, institutional and resource capabilities, to tackle problems related to policy and methods of development, while considering and respecting the potential, limits and needs of the people of the country concerned.

Cluster members are involved in capacity building measures, in particular in Cape Verde, where topics of high societal relevance to the small island state are being addressed using the expertise of the Cluster. At the same time, the conditions for scientific observation and research are being improved on a local level, which benefits both the citizens of Cape Verde and Cluster scientists.

These and other activities being carried out by Cluster scientists in other parts of the world are supported by the Cluster through regular information/networking workshops and by the UNESCO Chair in Integrated Marine Sciences at Kiel University.
