Numerical modelling of marine systems, either directly through simulation, or through the application of results from such simulations to empirical observational research projects, form an indispensable part of the cluster of excellence. Modern numerical simulation is based on a well coordinated and flexible model hierarchy that distinguishes itself through its quality and complexity. It requires highly efficient mathematical and computing algorithms, excellent computing facilities and data management systems, such that solutions can be found to the large scale problems that occur in high dimensions and multi-scale phenomena. This trend-setting research requires interdisciplinary collaboration to produce models using different methods.
