Projects

My research focuses on microbial mediated processes in global biogeochemical cycles using organic geochemical and stable isotope techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on the marine nitrogen cycle and microbial consortia that are involved in the fixation of N2 (e.g. diazotrophic unicellular and filamentous cyanobacteria) as well as the removal of nitrogen from the ocean by processes such as denitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox). For my research, I employ culture-dependent and -independent approaches to identify novel biological markers that can be used to trace for microbial organisms and their biological processes over geological time scales.
