LBV300-5 MiniROV
Today there is an increasing pressure on coastal and shelf seas as on one hand the cumulative use of different kind of resources is growing while on the other hand there is a political pressure due to different national and international codes like the “Fauna, Flora Habitat guidelines” or the “EU Marine Water Framework Directive”. They all require to map and assess marine habitats and to describe their ecological status. Direct observations of the seafloor are an essential part in this field of investigations. Full coverage, high resolution sediment and morphological seafloor mapping is possible with different hydroacoustic systems; however, all these backscatter information needs to be calibrated by sampling and direct observation. An influence of benthic organisms on the backscatter signal is obvious, but calibration by direct inspection is necessary. These requirements are met by the application of a shallow water ROV, which can be used even from small boats in shallow coastal areas. The development of research programs as well as scientific publications in this field requires the demonstration of real, high quality pictures. Data acquisition by underwater video observation will be implemented as a regular tool. The ROV is used to keep coastal science at Kiel University and at GEOMAR on a high level allowing international competition.
