and poster presentation “Humans and the Ocean” from students of the Kiel School of Sustainability

On the eve of the “Ocean Sustainability Science Symposium” a special evening for Kiel’s public and interested students will take place in the cultural center in the city gallery. In his talk Professor Reinhold Leinfelder, Freie Universität Berlin, will present approaches for an environmentally-friendly use of the ocean. Afterwards, master’s students of the Kiel School of Sustainability will present 15 impressive posters on the topic of “Humans and the Ocean”.

Never before in history of the Earth have humans changed the environment as drastically as in the past centuries. The oceans have been particularly affected by the changes. The pollution of the world’s oceans, for example, with plastic, the increasing rate of overfishing of many popular edible fish, sea level rise or ocean acidification and the impacts on calcifying organisms are just some of the problems with which the ecosystem ocean must cope.

But what does this mean for us humans? Are we helpless in the face of these effects or do we remain in control, can we still reverse this development and organize the use of the oceans in a more sustainable way? In his talk (in German language) Professor Reinhold Leinfelder draws attention to the key problems in the ocean and develops approaches for an environmentally friendly and responsible use of the ocean.

Professor Reinhold Leinfelder is a paleontologist and geologist at the Freie Universität Berlin. Between 2008 and 2013, he was a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Federal Committee on Global Environmental Changes (WBGU). He is co-author of the report “World in Transition – Governing the Marine Heritage”. Moreover, Leinfelder has been dealing with knowledge transfer from research to society for many years, among other things as director general of the Berlin Museum for Natural History. Since September 2014 Leinfelder has been the Director General of the House of the Future, a special exhibition center, which is being created by the German government and German science organizations in Berlin.

Poster presentation “Humans and Oceans”
Students of the Kiel School of Sustainability

Questions regarding the environment and sustainability will also be the topic at the School of Sustainability at Kiel University, which was officially established in November 2014. Last semester, under the title of “humans and oceans”, about 60 students of the masters’ course “Concepts of Sustainable Development and Environmental Management” focused on the impacts of human influence on the ocean and captured their results in 15 impressive scientific posters. The posters critically deal with the topics climate change, overfishing, marine litter and sea level rise and suggest approaches for a more sustainable use of the ocean. This is the first time that the students will present these results to the public.

Professor Dr. Martin Visbeck, spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean” / GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel will give an introduction to the evening

The evening lecture and poster presentation will take place on the eve of the Ocean Sustainability Science Symposium, March 4th to 6th in Kiel. Organizer of the international scientific symposium is the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean”. Experts from different disciplines, as well as officials from politics and civil society will exchange ideas on a course of action toward a more sustainable use of the world’s oceans.
