On average nearly 350 students aged eight to twelve came to each of the five lectures in the lecture hall H of the main auditorium and got a whiff of real researcher’s air.
“We are very happy about the high interest in the kids’ university. The mix of topics, rich in variety, and, in particular, the great willingness of the speakers to adjust their talks to the age group have been the key factors for the success from my point of view”, said the organizer, Dr. Katrin Knickmeier, head of school programs in the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean”.
This year for the first time the students got a kids’ university stamp pass in which their participation at the individual lectures was recorded. In particular, regular kids’ university listeners with at least four out of five stamps could take part in an award ceremony. 144 stamp passes were delivered or sent in by the 11th of February.
Yesterday, the guides Matti, Titus and Gustav, young assistants at the kids’ university lectures, drew the lucky winners at the Kiel research workshop in the botanical garden. In total 35 prizes totaling 500 Euro in value were drawn. In the next few days some young listeners from Neumünster, Eckernförde, Kiel and surroundings can look forward to books, experimental kits or science DVDs.
The kids’ and students’ university will continue in the winter semester 2015-16 and will start after the autumn holidays. Those who want to listen to a talk again can find some recordings of individual lectures and additional material on the past kids’ university talks on the website of the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean”. Further events for school classes and individual students take place in Kiel’s research laboratory in the botanical garden.
The kids’ and students’ university is organized by Kiel’s Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean” and is supported by the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN), as well as by Kiel University. The media partners of the kids’ and students’ university are the ‘Kieler Nachrichten’ (Kiel News) and GEOline, the adventure magazine for children between 8 and 14 years of age.
