Oxford, Paris, Madrid, Kiel region: The Science Night in the Kiel region will be part of the “European Researchers’ Night” which has been organized since 2005 and during which visitors are invited by researchers to experiment and to do research. In 2016 and 2017, 260 cities across Europe will take part in the European Science Night. A great pleasure for the Kiel region and its partners: Together they submitted the best proposal of the 113 proposals from across Europe.
“The decision of the EU commission to fund the Science Night in the Kiel region is a huge success and an important sign of appreciation for the cooperation of the districts Plön and Rendsburg-Eckernförde and the state capital Kiel,” says the chairman of the supervisory board, Kiel’s mayor Dr. Ulf Kämpfer. Furthermore, he said that he was particularly proud that the application of the Kiel region received the highest grades in all areas – of 15 possible points the Kiel region scored 14.5 points. He also stated that the project would contribute to the enhancement of the profile of the region as a good location to do science and research and to make it more visible outside the region. “We also want to show young people what diverse scientific careers are possible in the Kiel region,” said Kämpfer.
The European Science Night in the Kiel region should help the people, business and science in the region to get to know each other better and to appreciate each other. For this reason, the Science Night is open to children of kindergarten age and up, for school and university students and all who are interested in science. Visitors will be able meet scientists from their region, to get an insight into their life and work and to learn more about the importance of science for our living environment. Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein, Torsten Albig, has taken on the patronage for the Science Night in the Kiel region.
Entrance is free and a shuttle bus between the event locations will also be provided free of charge. The Science Night is funded by a grant of 163,000 Euros from the European Commission for two years as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions within the Framework Program for Research and Innovation 2020. In order to implement the program as planned, sponsors are still being sought.
