23. May 2016 ScienceStation on the Topic “Seas and Oceans”: Tour Kicks off at Dresden Central Station

Hands-on science in Germany’s train stations

The mobile hands-on exhibition ScienceStation has opened. From now on visitors can learn many interesting facts about the world of the oceans and seas between train and tram. The first stop of the tour through Germany’s train stations, which will last from May 23rd to October 11th, is Dresden.

How can we protect and maintain our seas and oceans? What secrets does the deep sea harbor? The ScienceStation approaches these and other questions relating to seas and oceans in a playful manner. From May 23rd to May 29th, the exhibition invites us to experiment and participate in Dresden. With interactive experiments and interesting background information it appeals equally to children, young people and adults.

The exhibition is made up of different stations which cover the topics the climate factor ocean, the national park Wadden Sea and the ecosystem coastal sea. The Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean” is taking part with the exhibit “Waste in the Sea“ which draws attention to littering the oceans and shows how long it takes for a plastic bag to degrade in the ocean. In addition, visitors will be able to play the Cluster’s Fish Length game. Here, visitors learn how big the fish should be when they are caught in order to avoid endangering the fish stock.

The ScienceStation is a joint project of Science in Dialogue (“Wissenschaft im Dialog”), the Deutsche Bahn and the magazine “Welt der Wunder”. Since 2008 the mobile hands-on exhibition has been touring through Germany’s train stations for several weeks every year. The tour always covers the topic of the current Science Year of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. The Science Year 2016*17 is devoted to seas and oceans. Further stops after Dresden will be Mainz, Munich, Erfurt and Cologne. The exhibition is open daily from 9am to 7pm, entrance is free.
