08. June 2016 Ocean Sampling Day - Kiel joins in on research

GEOMAR IS THE STARTING POINT FOR PARTICIPANTS

They are, among others, the basis of the food chain, absorb carbon dioxide or decompose dead organic material – microorganisms play an important role in the ocean. But which microbes exist where in the sea? And how does this composition change with time? In order to answer these questions, in 2014 microbiologists from Bremen started the Ocean Sampling Day (OSD).

Scientists sampled sea water and extracted genetic information from the microorganisms therein at 170 locations worldwide on the same day, June 21st. In 2015, they repeated the experiment. In 2016, the third OSD is planned, this time within the framework of the Science Year 2016*17 “Seas and Oceans”.

The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel has participated from the start with samples from the time-series station ‘Boknis Eck’. But this year, not only scientists will contribute to the OSD – anyone who would like to get an insight into marine research can contribute to worldwide knowledge about marine microorganisms. The GEOMAR is one of the official OSD hubs at which people interested can pick up their “sampling kits”. These packages contain everything needed to take samples of the sea from a landing dock, the beach or a boat in a scientifically correct way. A user manual and a video tutorial on the website www.my-osd.org explain the necessary processes step by step.

Additionally, for school classes or other interested groups there is the possibility of taking samples for the OSD together with scientists from the GEOMAR research unit Marine Microbiology. Through this, the participants will be able to get more information about current research topics in this subject area. Due to staff limitations, only a limited number of spots will be available, therefore registration is mandatory.

Pick-up times for the sampling kits at GEOMAR (individual participants):
Mo., June 13th, to Fr., June 17th, 9am to 15pm OR at the research unit Marine Microbiology at the GEOMAR west site, Düsternbrooker Weg 20, 24105 Kiel

or
Sa, June 18th, and Su, June 19th, 9 am - 18 pm at the ticket office of the GEOMAR Aquarium, Düsternbrooker Weg 20, 24105 Kiel (access from the Kiellinie)

Note: Those who pick up their kit directly have to register at www.my-osd.org in order to participate in OSD. Kits will be handed out as long as supplies last. If kits are no longer available in Kiel, there is the possibility to order them directly at www.my-osd.org.

Registration for school classes and groups:
Until June 14th  2016 by Prof. Dr. Ute Hentschel Humeida,
