In the open afternoon program of the Kiel 'Forschungswerkstatt', a set of laboratories at Kiel University open to school classes, from March 28th on every Tuesday from 15:30 to 18:00, young people will have the opportunity to conduct their own exciting projects about the seas and oceans.
The program includes, for example, excursions to the beach, measurements with the hydrophone at the Kiel Canal and independent sampling in the Kiel Fjord. The young researchers are accompanied by experienced scientists and teachers from the Kiel 'Forschungswerkstatt'.
"With the afternoon program, we would like to support young people with their own research questions and show them that science is fun," says Dr. Katrin Knickmeier, marine biologist at the Kiel 'Forschungswerkstatt'. "We would also like to encourage them to participate in Citizen Science projects. In the course of these they can learn how they can contribute to research themselves."
On the first afternoons in the ozean:werkstatt, school students are provided with insights into the diverse topics and working methods of marine science. During the second phase, they develop their own research questions and work on them in independent experiments and excursions. The researchers of tomorrow can form groups for these projects or work alone on a freely chosen topic. They can, for example, deal with plastic in the ocean, sea currents, plankton in the Baltic Sea, noise pollution and its impacts on animals or underwater robots.
For the implementation of the individual projects, laboratories, scientific equipment, a workshop, laptops, literature and materials from the student laboratory as well as the expertise of the team of the Kiel 'Forschungswerkstatt' are available to the school students. The program is free of charge. Interested students can register for the ozean:werkstatt from now on.

The Kiel Forschungswerkstatt, the school students' laboratory of Kiel University (CAU) and the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) is an extracurricular learning facility for such diverse topics as marine sciences, energy, the habitat earth and nanotechnology. The main tasks of the laboratory include the promotion of general and specific education as well as teacher education and training. In the ocean: lab school students encounter the habitat seas and oceans and current topics from marine science. They analyze the influence of human beings on the ecosystem ocean and its inhabitants.
