More Marine Conservation for Sustainable Development

On May 29, 2017 the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Federal Minister for Development Dr. Gerd Müller along with the Think Tanks (T20) of the G20 and the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" extend an invitation to participate in the dialogue event "The Future of the Oceans – More Marine Conservation for Sustainable Development" in Berlin.

Pollution, overfishing and climate change put pressure on our seas and threaten the livelihood of millions of people. Particularly in developing countries the water is proverbially up to the people's necks. It's high time to strengthen world-wide efforts to sustain the seas and coasts as a livelihood for future generations.

How can we reconcile the protection of the oceans and sustainable use to secure nutrition and economic development? How can we strengthen international cooperation for sustainable development of the seas? What concrete steps can politics, the private sector and civil society take?

The group of the most important 20 industrial countries and emerging economies has, above all, a particular responsibility. In order to achieve a reversal of the trend in regard to the development of the oceans, innovative approaches and stronger collaboration between science and politics is necessary.
The dialogue event is being jointly organized by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean". The aim of the event is to send a joint signal, together with the T20, to the G20 summit for the future of the oceans and to present new development initiatives of the BMZ.
