International Congress on Asian Medicines at Kiel University

From the 6th to the 12th of August over 350 participants, mostly from the East Asia, will convene during the "9th International Congress on Traditional Asian Medicines (ICTAM IX)" at Kiel University.

The international convention is under the patronage of the minister-president of state of Schleswig-Holstein, Daniel Günther. In Kiel, the specialists will discuss the increasing significance of traditional Asian medical therapies and its application in the past, present and future under the title "Asian Medicines: Encounters, Translations and Transformations". The scientific spectrum is broad: represented are the natural sciences, the humanities, economics and the social sciences. "In order to comprehensively understand traditional Asian medicine, several disciplines have to be brought together: Doctors and supervisors of clinical tests, medical anthropologists, ethnobotanists and ethnopharmacologists. This conference provides the perfect framework within which doctors of traditional Asian medicine can present their expertise and discuss," Professor Angelika Messner from the China Centre of Kiel University classifies the importance of the seven-day event.
The convention will be opened with a welcoming addresses by Dr. Heiner Garg (deputy minister-president of the state of Schleswig-Holstein), Professor Detlev Ganten (Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, President of the World Health Summit), Professor Anja Pistor-Hatam (Vice President of Kiel University), Dr. Carsten Leffmann (CEO of the Medical Association of Schleswig-Holstein), Professor Ulrich Stephani (Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Kiel University) as well as Dr. Bernhard Schwartländer (Representative of the World Health Organization in Bejing, China) in the Frederik-Paulsen-Hörsaal (Main Lecture Hall) of Kiel University on August 7th.
The Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" will be represented by Prof. Ruth Schmitz-Streit from the Institute of General Microbiology will represent with a presentation on new strategies for biofilm inhibition and Prof. Deniz Tasdemir from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel with a presentation on active substances from the sea.
Hosts of the ICTAM IX are the International Association for the Study of Traditional Asian Medicine (IASTAM) and the China Centre of Kiel University.
