07. September 2017 Marine Research at the First Digital Week Kiel

Future-oriented concepts for Digital Ocean, new ways of digital visualization –

Kiel marine sciences will present ideas and new concepts for the Digital Ocean and are invited to participate in discussions. The artistic installation "Drift" on sea-level rise will celebrate its premiere.

From September 16th to 23rd the City of Kiel will host the first Digital Week. According to the organizers, in more than 200 events actors from science, industry, education and the public together with experts will exchange ideas about the digital transformation and its impact on society and will discuss new methods of digitalization. Kiel marine scientists from the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" and Kiel Marine Science (KMS) will present their work at various events on the occasion of the Digital Week together with their partners GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design.

Overview over the events

September 18th, 2017
Panel discussion "Digitalization of the Oceans – inventory, perspectives and visions"
Time: 17:00 pm to 19:30 pm
Location: Hotel Steigenberger Conti Hansa, Schlossgarten 7
The digitalization of the oceans is a huge topic of the future. In key note speeches, for example on the topics "intelligent fish nets" (Glaucus), Underwater Fish Observatory (UFO) or sensors for the recognition and filtration of microplastics, experts will present future-oriented digital projects from marine research.
In the subsequent panel discussion chaired by Reimer Tewes, spokesperson of the Kiel section of the Economic Council (Wirtschaftsrat der CDU e.V.), representatives from science (among them Prof. Martin Visbeck, spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean") and representatives from business will discuss the chances and challenges of technical progress for science, business and the society.

September 20th
Workshop 'Digital Ocean'
Time 12:00 pm to 18:00 pm
Location: Centre for Molecular Biosciences (ZMB)
Contact: Prof. Dr. Willi Hasselbring, University and Dr. Reiner Jung, Kiel University, reiner.jung@email.uni-kiel.de
The workshop "Digital Ocean" should inform about the challenges of the digital transformation in marine research and present first potential approaches for a solution. Whether climate forecasting, the calculation of fish populations or simulations on the future warming of the oceans – research is no longer conceivable without efficient research software and data flow. But how can we manage the digital transformation to more open and transparent research methods? These and further questions will be discussed after the short talks with those interested from marine research, information technology and the public.

September 20th to 23rd– Interface Meets Information Design
Time: We 19:00 pm to 22:00 pm, Th/Fr 10:00 am to 18:00 pm, Sa 10:00 am to 14:00 pm
Location: Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design, Legienstraße 35, 24103 Kiel

On the occasion of the Digital Week, on four days the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design will present exhibits, installations and new visualizations in its experimental laboratory in Legienstraße. Particular focus will be on the topic "ocean". The project Drift, an audio-visual installation about sea-level rise and the future of the ocean, which the marine scientist Dr. Nico Glock (GEOMAR) developed within the framework of a project in the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" together with the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, will celebrate its premiere. Moreover, further exhibits from students, primarily from the areas of interface design and interactive information design, can be seen, among them the exhibits 30° and ENSO.
