The cooperation between Kiel and Halifax in the field of marine research has a long tradition. "The participation of so many alumni at our conference in Halifax has once again demonstrated the close ties between both locations in the field of marine research," says Prof. Ralph Schneider, Director of Kiel Marine Science (KMS) at the Kiel University and speaker of the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean". "Conferences such as ours focusing on the ocean are an ideal framework for keeping in touch with former Kiel marine scientists and are an ideal opportunity for young researchers to get to know new research environments," Schneider continued. Prof. Douglas Wallace, University of Dalhousie, who lived and worked in Kiel for 13 years, adds: "We have realised that no single country and certainly no single research institution can address the ocean's problems. So the connection that exists between Kiel and Halifax is already a model of how we are working together towards a sustainable development of the ocean. But we now also see opportunities to build on the strong academic partnership and move forward to connecting ocean-related businesses in both countries, for mutual benefit. So we ended the conference aware that Canada and Germany can take a leading role in the world by showing how to work together".
The three-day Researcher-Alumni Conference, organised under the leadership of the Kiel Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" together with the Canadian partners Dalhousie University, Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) and the Centre for Ocean Ventures & Entrepreneurship (COVE), focused on selected topics in sustainable ocean development and the implementation of the Ocean Goal (SDG 14) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Former and current young researchers from Kiel and Halifax presented their research and presented perspectives on the topics "Fisheries and Aquaculture", "The Role of the Ocean in the Climate System", "Ocean Governance" and "Ocean Observation". The third day of the conference concluded with a dialogue on marine technology and knowledge exchange, which was joined by representatives from the Kiel Ministry of Economics Affairs and German Associations for Marine Technolgoy (GMT). The focus was on the question of how the transatlantic transfer of knowledge to the business sector can succeed and which framework conditions are necessary for technological implementation.
"The three-day conference and the exchange with Canadian colleagues once again demonstrated the excellent cooperation between the two countries in the field of international promotion of young researchers and technology transfer," said Prof. Karin Schwarz, Vice President for Research, Technology Transfer and Young Scientists at Kiel University, at the end of the intensive conference days, which had travelled to Halifax as a representative of Kiel University and used the conference for initial discussions on joint concepts within the framework of marine technology transfer.
