31. August 2019 2019 IMBeR Future Oceans2 Open Science Conference Brest

Session on ocean recovery organized by Kiel scientists

Decades of marine research show that human activities have strongly altered marine systems. As a consequence, marine life, ecosystem functioning and the linked benefits for human societies are at risk. Future strategies to counteract the on-going degradation of marine ecosystems and to support their recovery might go well beyond 'classical' conservation measures and include active intervention.

In order to promote the exchange on this topic, Kiel scientists held the session "Ocean Recovery – Strategies to mitigate anthropogenic pressures and support marine ecosystem recovery for a sustainable future ocean" at the IMBeR Future Oceans2 Open Science Conference at Le Quartz Congress Centre in Brest, France from June 17th – 21st, 2019.
During the session, organized by Future Ocean Members Anja Engel and Enno Prigge (both GEOMAR) together with Carlos Duarte (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) as well as Thorsten Blenckner (Stockholm University), international scientists came together to discuss current and future attempts to restore degraded marine ecosystems and services. Speakers from various disciplines presented their research on mitigating pressures, e.g. "Using marine macrophytes to mitigate global climate change" by Fanny Noisette (Université du Québec à Rimouski), "Counteracting declining ocean productivity by artificial upwelling" by Ulf Riebesell (GEOMAR) and "Challenges in Marine Restoration Ecology: How techniques, assessment metrics and ecosystem valuation can lead to improved restoration success" by Charles Cadier (Griffith University).
Participating scientists agreed that comprehensive strategies to counteract the on-going degradation of marine ecosystems are urgently needed. Such strategies will give rise to novel, scientific, conceptual, legal, and ethical questions and need to be addressed to "achieve the ocean we need for the future we want" - referring to Karen Evans, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), and her talk "The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030): achieving the ocean we need for the future we want".
