Projects
My research interest is in genome evolution of microbes, especially the influence of phages and foreign DNA elements on genome evolution. Bacteria and archaea defend foreign elements like phages, plasmids and other incoming DNA, but they can balance between defense and the positive adaptive effects of horizontal gene transfer. In this context I focus on the adaptive immune system of bacteria and archaea that distinguishes between different elements in a sequence-specific manner. The interaction between microbes and phages has an effect on genome evolution, diversification and population structure and is thus also of interest in an ecological context.
In addition to my main research, I participate in collaborations with experimentalists where I can contribute to bioinformatics analyses, especially with respect to genomics, phylogeny reconstruction and next generation sequencing data analysis.
