29. January 2014 What is the Future of Global Governance of the Oceans? Possible contributions from Germany

The Sustainability Summit Rio+20 clearly showed that the global community is at a turning point regarding marine protection. More than 40% of the seas are considered strongly influenced by humans. A fundamental change in the handling of the seas must be the keystone to sustainable development.

Following an invitation from IASS executive director Professor Klaus Töpfer and the speaker of the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean” (GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and Kiel University) Professor Martin Visbek, leading marine scientists along with representatives from ministries and civil society will come together in Berlin on the 29th of January to discuss questions and possible approaches for sustainable ocean governance. Reports by the German Advisory Board on Global Environmental Change (WBGU) “Changing World –Human Heritage: Ocean”, proposals by Kiel scientists for a sustainable development goal and results from the IASS research project “Advancing Governance of the High Seas” will be presented as possible transformation paths.
